A Saint from the Jackdaw of Rheims in The Ingoldsby Legends, 1868, oil on canvas by Briton Rivière, British, 1840-1920. McLean Museum and Art Gallery, Inverclyde Council, Greenock, Scotland.
The Ingoldsby Legends was a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poems supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor but was really the pen name of an English Clergyman, Richard Harris Barham.
Rivière created only one known painting which did not include an animal. He studied both living and dead animals to better depict their forms and was a significant artist of his time.
